Project four: wool juju hat

Hey guys! I'm a little slow with getting this last project posted. Probably because it didn't turn out as well as I would have liked and I think it's because I couldn't seem to find the right yarn.

And so it goes....

I ended up choosing this gorgeous, deep fuchsia color; 100% wool yarn from Mustard Seed Dreams on Main Street in Old Town. They have a huge selection of specialty yarns that have come in handy for a handful of other projects I've done in the past. I'm not going to list step by step instructions, since they are posted on a website called FlutterFlutter. But I will say the steps are very, very easy and I made two of these wreaths in under one hour.

I think the yarn she used was maybe an acrylic/wool blend? It's awesome! But nowhere to be found around this town! She said she bought it at Michael's. I'll have to check maybe in Boise the next time I'm there.

This cream yarn is a wool/acrylic blend I bought from JoAnn's. It sort of looks like a groomed mop head, right?! Gotta love DIY projects....even when they don't turn out like your vision!

And so we can all pine over how lovely the real, authentic Ju Ju hats are. Sigh.

$600 may be worth it, right? Mr. Keller doesn't think so.

Project three: Spend $10

This week's project was pretty simple. I gave myself a budget of $10.00 to fill up the awkward portion of wall space next to my tv console buffet in my living room. I've tried just about every shape of every kind of decoration, but have never liked anything I came up with. Earlier this week, I scored these vintage mirrors for a combined total of $9.98 and for now, they are really working in this space!

The idea of a budget can be challenging, especially when it's a fairly small amount of money. I think I've grown to love that sort of challenge, and have found that it can also be fun. Especially when you're able to find cast-off items and turn them into something beautiful inside your home.

Hello my darlings! I had such a fun time shopping on Saturday, I wanted to share with you a chic new store in town and introduce to you friend and shop-owner Jen Putnam.

Her shop East Idaho Home Interiors is a new home decor store located in a historic warehouse on South 2nd Street in Pocatello!

While Jen does have some vintage furniture, essentially everything else is brand new!

Here's a list of some of the things available:
Lots of mirrors, lots of awesome wreaths, decorative pillows, all kinds of brand new bedding (some awesome quilts, too!), lots of floral and greenery, clocks, lamps, wall-hangings, wrought iron pieces, WAY cute purses and scarves, and TONS of high-quality furniture. I also want to mention she has some adorable, brand new cribs (solid wood!) and lots of really cute baby stuff, too. Even though I'm soooo a mother of boys, I did notice how she had a plethora of darling things for little girls! If you are getting ready to decorate a nursery or child's room, this is the place to go!

When this project was in its beginning stages, Jen told me how she wished there was a store in our relatively small town that offered chic and unique home decor and bedding. Fast-forward a few years, she's combined her vision with hard work, and she's created just that! The entire store is full of one-of-a-kind pieces; things you won't find anywhere else. Project two: the infamous book page wreath

I've been on the fence about these wreaths ever since I saw them (and I suppose I still am!). Some days I love them and some days, I'm not so sure. After seeing the ginormous one Nester made, I decided I would give it a shot.

Here's what I came up with:

Whenever I decide to try a DIY project, I usually always try to use thrifted supplies. That way, if I end up not liking the finished product, I don't really mind trashing it, since I didn't pay much to begin with.

Things you'll need:

Wooden frame: $1.50

Old wreath: $2.00

Old encyclopedia: $2.00

Glue gun and glue sticks

And a good two hours of your time

I gathered the supplies and spread them out on the floor after this kiddos were sound asleep. Mr. Keller watched tv (really loud!) while I slaved away, noisily rattling papers and burning my fingers in the same places over and over again.

I got to put my new kindle fire to good use, too! (My handsome santa is always so good to me!)

I tore the pages out, rolled them two different ways, and then pinched them at the bottom, where I then put a dollop of hot glue and stuck them to the wooden wreath. Pretty straight-forward and simple.

And here's what two hours and three blisters produced:

I think I'll probably spend another hour or so, filling in the center with more paper rolls, so it looks more like the one I wanted to try to copy.

As with last week's project, this is very fail-safe! And if you don't like what you're seeing once you start, start over again! Isn't that sort of the fun of it?

Book pages vs. sheet music:
Of all the paper wreaths out there, I've always like the book page ones better. I think it's because they are usually made to be fuller, which is the look I like for wreaths. And when you use an encyclopedic dictionary, they usually have sweet little illustrations here and there, and that makes the detail more interesting. Plus, tiny lines of words make for quite the poetic look. (I'm an English sort of gal.)

And lastly, I added a few brown apple tree twigs for contrast. You could also get the same sort of contrast by placing a simple twig wreath in the center, too.

Paper embellishements:
Nester also wrote a great post about all sorts of paper embellishments. I originally bought this frame thinking I would try to make a rectangular book page wreath, instead of the usual round style. I may still give it a try, but it'll be a while. I'm sort of "paged out" now. Instead, I decided to cut a few leaf shaped pieces out and hot glue them to the side of the frame. I think this would be cute to embellish all sorts of spaces, including frames with pictures inside them. The possibilities are really rather endless. And pretty cute, too.

Project one: painting jute rugs

I had this wild idea of painting the jute rugs I have in my kitchen. Jute rugs are very inexpensive (this small oval one was $4.99 at Ross) and easy to experiment with. I also figured that since they don't really have a front or back side, I could always flip the rug over if the project turned out to be disastrous.

Things you'll need:
a rug
masking tape/painters tape
paint (latex, interior, exterior, craft paint, whatever)
sponge brush
measuring tape, if you want to be precise

I, myself, don't really care to take the time to be precise, so I just eyeballed this oval rug and taped accordingly (hence the crooked lines!).

I took some cream paint in a plastic bowl and mixed some water with it to make it extra runny. I dabbed the paint on until I was satisfied with the thickness and then I pulled the tape off.

I decided to get brave after I used the cream paint and used black paint on my rectangle rug. It turned out okay (or at least okay enough that when Mr. Keller came home yesterday, he thought I had bought a new rug!). But I'm not certain I'm a fan of it just yet. It may need a white stripe or two in between. We will see!

Again, this is a super easy project, and fairly inexpensive. And because you always have the other side in case you don't like what you end up with, it's pretty fail-safe.

How awesome would it be to paint scuffed up wood floors?! Would you be bold enough to do so? I'm not so sure I could bring myself to do it, but the end result sure makes a stunning statement.

Hello my dears! I hope you all had a long stretch of a weekend, eating leftover pie and wearing over-sized sweats. We enjoyed a trip to Boise and an afternoon spent at Tai Pan and of course, my favorite: the Home Goods/TJ Maxx superstore! For the first time in years, my mom and I skipped Black Friday, since these days, I value my sleep much more than any good deal! How predictable and unexciting!!

We will be posting a handful of new items this week, including some cozy twig bucket/basket things that would be perfect for holding firewood. I'm in a major Christmas-decorating mood, since we're planning our upcoming weekend around picking out that perfect tree. But, we'll see if I can wait that long! We may end up settling for something unromantic, like a pre-cut tree from Lowe's!

Hey you guys! Just dropping in to share our new dining room curtains with you, and to share my source of purchase! They are actually panels I cut from indoor/outdoor material from Walmart. It was clearanced out at $6.00 per yard, which is quite the deal. It's super heavy, weighted material, and truth be told, I haven't even hemmed them yet. I've just tucked and folded where needed....bam! No-sew curtains!

It's a pretty bold pattern in my otherwise VERY NEUTRAL house, but I'm loving the contrast they add! I believe our Pocatello Walmart store still has some left, if you'd care to check it out. And if your window isn't too wide, you could probably get away with just purchasing three yards. Because the bolt is extra wide, the fabric is definitely wide enough to make two panels out of just three yards....and that would be....$9.00 each panel. Such a good deal!

My own flea market finds

I scored some killer items this weekend, myself, and I just thought I'd share a few pictures.

I love this rusty Idaho license plate. I'm a homegrown Idaho girl and oh, so proud of it. I love the aged patina of this plate and will be displaying it all year around.

This rusty birdcage is killer. My first find of the weekend! Love it!

This framed picture was propped up against the leg of a table at a booth I had already passed by a few times. I love how romantic it is. From the yellow rose in her wavy hair, to the words 'That's how I need you'. I had to have it! And it turns out it's actually framed sheet music from the early 1900s. Even sweeter.

Oh this tractor. I'm a momma of boys and when I spotted this tractor, I couldn't get my money out fast enough. $4.00, you guys! $4.00! And my three year-old loves it even more than I do. It's such a heavy, quality toy and it bears a stamp 'made in the USA'. It doesn't get much better than that. I love it.

I could have spent hours rummaging through this booth full of vintage jewelry! She was letting things go for ridiculous prices (think $6.00 for vintage turquoise/silver rings....) and I had a blast!

I'm a sucker for clip earrings and loved the bright color of this pair.

And last, but soooo not least, is this gorgeous silver-plated bowl.

I love the finial on the lid and the weaved design.

My dears, we had such a blast at the WildHare Flea Market this weekend. I'm pretty wiped out (and probably will be for a few more days), but it was so worth it! It was such a joy to meet you all. We had such a good time making new friends and meeting up with old ones, too. Mr. Keller is such a trooper, I tell you what. He carried everything from here to there, and endured me bossing him around the whole weekend. What a champ.

I also wanted to say that we'll be announcing the winner of our black distressed chair giveaway here shortly. And here's a few more pictures of our booth.

WildHare Flea Market This Weekend!

My darlings, I just wanted to stop in and say hello since it's been quite a while and I sort of miss ya! We're putting finishing touches on all of our flea market goodies and I'm getting so excited to set up our little booth! We have some really great pieces up for grabs, and some really sweet 'Interiors' items as well.

We will be posting pictures of most of the available items later this week, but we cannot sell anything prior to the actual flea market. Our items will be scored on a first-come, first-serve basis at the flea market, beginning with Friday night's special preview. The flea market will be held at the Aslett's Museum of Clean at 711 South Second Street in Pocatello.

Here's the schedule:

Friday 7pm-10pm - admission $5.00 (this ticket gets you in all weekend!)
*Along with getting first-pick of all the great handmade and vintage goodies that will be available, there will be live music and goodies tasting at a small additional cost.

My dears, I just wanted to drop in and say hello. It's been a while, I know, but rest assured we've been working up a storm! We're preparing items for our booth at Linda Davies' Wildhare Flea Market which will be held at Don Aslett's Museum of Clean here in Pocatello on October 21st, 22nd and 23rd (though we'll just have our booth up Friday and Saturday only). We'll have lots of furniture and decor available, and a few handmade items as well. I will post pictures of the items that Friday so you can all be given a 'heads up' on what we'll have available.

In the mean time, Mr. Keller and I will be posting a black distressed queen headboard and a black distressed Broyhill hutch tomorrow. I'm excited for the hutch because it's been so long since we've done one! It has turned out very cute and I can't wait to share! We'll also have a few smaller items up for grabs tomorrow as well.

Good grief, you guys. I love orange. A lot. But I only love it for so long then I'm over it for a good ten months until the season greets us once again. That being said, September is one of my favorite months to decorate my house. It's an 'in between' sort of month where summer lingers while we wait to embrace all of fall. My favorite recent thrift store finds!

Good morning, my dears! I thought I'd stop by to share a few recent finds from the last few months. Shopping trips always start out with business in mind, but most of the time, I end up keeping at least one or two items for our own home.

Recently, I fell in love with all the pops of tangerine orange in Pottery Barn's August catalog and right away I started digging through my decor storage bins to try to find my favorite items in that color that I had tucked away.

I started out with this really great scalloped bowl I scored a few years ago at the D.I. for $1.00. I still remember when I spotted it on the bottom shelf, I literally (accidentally) broke an item trying to get to it. (Oops!) Since I lean towards more neutral tones in my house, I only have this bowl out for decoration in the late summer months and then I put it away for another year. Evenstill, it's one of my very favorite pieces. And this summer, I sort of built a color scheme around it, and tried to carry that pretty color throughout the rest of the kitchen and family room.

Vintage cutting board: an estate sale find, $1.00.

I scored this brand new linen hat this weekend for $3.00. I'm not so much a hat kind of girl, but I think, on occassion, hats make really great decor pieces -- especially during the warmer months. I love the orange fringe!

Locker crates are my abolute favorite (especially the ones that still have the number plates on them) and I always try to buy them whenever I come across them. I picked this one up last weekend at a yard sale for $1.00.

This vintage dinner bell is my favorite find of the summer. It was $0.75 at a local thrift store and I couldn't get it into my cart fast enough! I've wanted one for several months now, and can't believe my luck in being able to thrift one for so cheap!

The metal pitcher was also a thrift store find for $1.00 and the cute dish towels were clearanced out at TJ Maxx for $3.00. The thick rope basket was also a thrifted Pier One find from a few months back.

I bought this great pottery bowl for $2.50 from Linda's Wildhare yard sale a few weeks ago. If you know her, you know the girl has great taste, so of course her own personal yard sale had some great things up for grabs! The loop handle is my favorite!

I've dreamed of mason jar soap dispensers ever since Country Living featured the idea a few years back. The idea, however, back then was that you had to purchase a special soap pump in order for it to work. I came across this blog post about a super easy DIY way, so I thought I'd give it a try. It literally took five minutes and all you need is a hammer and a nail or screw. I popped about six holes in a circle shape in the middle of the lid and then shimmied a plastic soap pump through the hole. The soap pump was just one from a cheap bottle of soap I bought at walmart. Easy! Inexpensive! And such a sweet vintage touch to your kitchen decor.

Purses, along with hats, are another great, practical decor accessory. I picked up this brand new purse this weekend at the Goodwill for $6.00, and it fits perfectly in the color scheme I'm going for in my kitchen.

I love love love this wooden filing cabinet! It's another find from Linda's yard sale!!!! I keep going back and forth trying to decide whether I want to leave it just the way it is, or if I want to use chalkboard paint inside the squares of wood. I love the brass hardware too. Lovely!

I'm a sucker for corduroy jackets and if you ask Mr. Keller, he'd tell you I have a closet full of them! While that is sort of the truth, I had to have just one more! This one is the perfect autumn color blend between a deep olive purple and brown. I paid $7.00 for it, which is way, way more than I think used clothes should be priced at, but nonetheless, it had to be mine. I was even more please when I came home to find that it was vintage. It has this adorable little tag attached inside!

This mirror is my favorite find from this weekend! It really didn't photograph well enough to do it justice. Its shape is so unique and while I don't usually gravitate to things of this style, I think it's going to act as something so unexpected and cool as I work it into my other decor.

The striped duvet is from walmart.com (I took our regular comforter off for the summer), and the rose pillow cover is one I made from this really great vintage fabric I thrifted a few years ago.

This wooden box is from Vain and Vintage from earlier this summer, and the pussywillow branches are from a yard sale back in June.

I added this clock to our mantle a few weeks ago. It's one from Real Deals that we've had for years now and had just been sitting in my closet.

These vintage insulators were $.75 each last week at D.I.

My darlings,

Just stopping in to say hello. I've had some sweet luck lately scoring some great finds. Some I'm planning to sell, and some I simply can't part with.

Mr. Keller sold my truck out from under me a few weeks ago (we're looking for a new one), and you'd be surprised the things I've been able to fit in the trunk of my car.....like this incredible vintage chest/trunk I scored at a local thrift store last week. Yes, I somehow propped it in my car trunk and made it home without catastrophe! You'd fall off of your chair if you knew how much I paid for it. And I'm serious. Let's just say it's somewhere in the 'feeling-guilty' range, as in the type of guilt you might feel if you've stolen something. Not that I've ever stolen anything. But I sort of felt like I stole this chest.

I was first thinking I would paint it cream and heavily distress it, since the sides are super rusty. But now I'm thinking I love it perfectly just the way it is. I think I'll use it as a coffee table. Anyway, between that and a handful of other smaller finds, I can't wait to share more pictures of some new things I'm keeping for my home. To me, there's soooo nothing like a good treasure hunt, and I'm sure you agree.

In the mean time, we've reduced pricing again on several 'Interiors' items, and have a ton of cute new things we gathered this weekend. We'll be posting those new things in the next day or so.
